Your Microbiome Grows With You
Your microbiome might be the most important relationship in your life. It’s certainly the longest!
The diverse community of beneficial bacteria living in your gut can affect nearly every aspect of your health for your entire life!
Beneficial bacteria start to colonize your gut within a few days after birth. These helpful bacteria come from all over our environment. Some of the earliest we get from our mom is during the birthing process, breastfeeding, and snuggles.
Other factors that determine the makeup of our microbiome include:
- Geographical location
- Genetic makeup
- Diet
- Sex
- Disease/health
As we grow up we start to encounter more environmental bacteria from changing diets and experiences. By age three, our microbiome has changed a lot and developed into a "mini" version of adult gut bacteria.
Serious disease and major dietary or geographical changes may cause changes in our microbiome. Also, as we age, our gut's bacterial community begins to shift away from a healthy state to an inflammatory state.
